BraCom Expands Fiber Network in Berg and Ullerøy

We are well underway with the expansion of GlobalConnect’s new fiber network in the Berg/Ullerøy area of Sarpsborg, and customer connections are now being completed across the project area.

This is a project we are particularly proud of, both because of the technical challenges involved and the close cooperation between everyone taking part.

Project Manager Fredrik Haugen Petersen and Planning Engineer Helene Silseth identified early on that the difficult ground conditions would require a different approach. Much of the planned route runs through areas with extensive rock in and alongside the road, making conventional trenching impractical.

Working with our in-house civil works team, which has extensive experience in microtrenching, we developed a custom offset trenching machine. This allows us to install the route through grass alongside the roadway rather than cutting into the road itself.

The method has kept disruption to the surrounding terrain to a minimum. The trench is only 3 cm wide and 37 cm deep, reducing the need for surface restoration and allowing the work to be completed more quickly and with less impact on the local environment than traditional excavation methods.

“The project got off to a challenging start when Storm Amy hit the area, but since then the work has progressed very efficiently. Quick decisions and a strong joint effort have kept us on track to get all customers connected before Christmas. Skilled subcontractors and good communication have been key to the progress we have made here in Ullerøy,” says Project Manager Fredrik Haugen Petersen.

We would also like to thank Sarpsborg Municipality for a professional and constructive process in finding the right solution. Working together, we identified measures that made the project feasible despite the difficult ground conditions. Traditional excavation would have caused considerably more disruption, both during and after construction, as well as significantly higher costs.
